Can belonging be built?

After more than a decade in Finland, I realized I had never consciously asked whether the place where I had built my life was still the place I would choose to build its next version.

So for one month, I treated belonging as a research question.

I tracked my days, tested different ways of connecting, documented the places and interactions that gave or took energy, and examined whether Helsinki could support the life I actually wanted — socially, professionally, emotionally, and environmentally.

31 daily entries
29 events logged
17 events attended
194 interactions tracked
30 days of field notes

The Belonging Experiment

  1. 01

    Define what “viable” actually means

I broke an abstract life question into six observable lenses: Ambient Effect, Social Resonance, Social Reciprocity, Community Continuity, Professional Sustainability, and Future Pull.

  2. 02

    Track the ordinary days

Each day, I scored 5–6 sub-metrics within those lenses and tracked the intellectual, emotional, physical, communal, and habitual value my interactions added to my life.

  3. 03

    Test different ways of connecting

I attended events, experimented with friendship apps and social platforms, accepted and extended invitations, hosted gatherings, followed introductions, and deliberately opened new social “front doors.”

  4. 04

    Measure return, not just activity

For events, I tracked Energy ROI — joy gained relative to effort spent — alongside whether an interaction created new contacts, meaningful follow-up, or actual continuity.

  5. 05

Keep field notes alongside the numbers

For 30 days, I documented what the quantitative measures could not explain: what surprised me, what felt reciprocal, what depleted me, what made me feel known, and which moments made Helsinki feel more or less like home.

  6. 06

    Re-read the evidence every week

Weekly dispatches compared the data, events, and field notes against the original decision question: was the evidence pointing toward staying or leaving?

What does *your* belonging look like right now?

12 questions across seven lenses. A quick snapshot of where belonging feels strong, where the signals are mixed, and what might be worth paying attention to.

Where this goes next

From one participant to many

The interesting version of this question isn't personal. If the components of belonging are designable, they're designable for neighborhoods, communities and organizations, too.

Your turn

Where do you feel most like you belong — and why?

Specific is more useful than profound. A room, a routine, a person, a time of day.
